I was booking tickets for Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre and noticed some seats marked as ‘limited view.’ What exactly does that mean

A “limited view” or “restricted view” label means that something about the seat’s position will prevent you from seeing the entire stage or set. At the Sondheim Theatre (and many other West End venues) this can happen for a few reasons:

      – **Physical obstructions:** Some older theatres have support pillars or safety rails that partially block the stage from certain seats. For example, seats at the extreme sides of the Dress Circle or Grand Circle might have a pillar in your line of sight.

      – **Overhangs:** Seats at the back of the stalls can be under the overhang of the circle above. You’ll still see the stage, but you might lose the top of tall set pieces or projections.

      – **Side-on perspective:** In curved auditoriums, seats right at the edges face slightly away from the stage. You’ll miss action occurring on the far side and spend the evening looking across the audience.

      – **High stages / safety rails:** Front-row seats can be marketed as restricted if the stage is high and you miss performers’ feet, while seats in the front of upper levels sometimes have a safety rail that intrudes into your sightline.

These seats are usually discounted to reflect the compromise. For some shows the restriction is minor and they can be a bargain; for others you might miss key moments. It’s always worth checking seat view photos on the theatre’s website or on sites like SeatPlan if you’re unsure.
